Grading

Tentatively, the approximate weights for grades will be the following:

Class Participation 30%

Midterm Exam 40%

Assignments 10%*

Final Project 40%

“Class participation” means not just attending, but joining in discussions and demonstrating that you understand the material.

Note that assignments will be 10% of the final grade provided that an enthusiastic effort is made to complete the assignments. Otherwise assignments will be 30% of the grade. The two lowest assignment scores will be dropped.

You’ll note that the percentages do not add up to 100%, indicating that they are approximate.

For any particular work, the grade standard is the following:

  • A: Very good graduate level work, does not have to be perfect, but does not have any serious problems
  • B: Good graduate work, may have one significant problem
  • C: Barely acceptable graduate work, with multiple significant problems, indicates that the student is not gaining a good grasp of the material
  • F: Not turned in, or of poor quality
